Ms. Hinds is Founder and Executive Director of Chesapeake Beach Professional Seminars and Founder and Director of Barstow Acres Children’s Center, a non-profit organization that provides children’s mental health services. Trained in Gestalt play therapy with Violet Oaklander, PhD, RPT-S. Authored chapter, Play Therapy with African-American Children in text,Cultural Issues in Play Therapy by Eliana Gil, PhD, RPT-S and Athena Drewes, PsyD, RPT-S.
Barstow Acres Counseling Center is a 501 C3 non-profit organization located in Prince Frederick, Maryland. They are a United Way member Agency. BACC is the vision of Sonia Hinds, APRN,BC. Ms. Hinds is a registered nurse with a Master’s Degree in mental health nursing and a clinical specialist-psychotherapist. Ms. Hinds recognized the need for additional quality mental health services for young children and families in a family setting with specific modalities for children such as play therapy, art therapy, and sand trap therapy. In addition to individual, group, family therapy, we also offer therapeutic summer camp and parenting workshops. She has developed the Barstow Acres Children Center to help children with developmental and delay challenges. It is a model program in Calvert County, Southern MD and throughout the state and nation. Sonia brings in several resources – doctors, therapists, social workers, etc. to help in the development of the entire child as well as the parent. She employs youth and also works tirelessly in the community. Every year, Sonia conducts a Parent Empowerment Conference that helps bring the much needed resources to Southern MD. She also conducts a specialized Therapeutic Summer Camp. Unlike many non profit organizations, Sonia has taken out loans to open a state of the art facility in Prince Frederick, MD. Her services include the following: Individual therapy, Group Therapy, Parent Training, Therapeutic Summer Camp, and Annual Parent Empowerment Conference/Workshops. Ms. Hinds has won many awards and citations for her innovative services.
