Barbara Ives Leads CSM Office of Strategic Partnerships

CSM Office of Strategic Partnerships Director Barbara IvesThe College of Southern Maryland has named Barbara Ives of St. Mary’s County as director of the Office of Strategic Partnerships including CSM’s Nonprofit Institute.

As director of strategic partnerships, Ives reports directly to CSM President Dr. Brad Gottfried, with input from CSM’s three county advisory councils and CSM leadership to help strengthen, coordinate and promote strong community partnerships that will result in new programs, services and business opportunities for the college. Additionally, Ives provides leadership to the CSM Nonprofit Institute with a mission to assist nonprofit organizations throughout the region to enhance their effectiveness and achieve success in fulfilling their missions.

“I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity to join the CSM team and have the opportunity to help the college build valued community relationships that foster strong partnerships which will enrich our Southern Maryland region,” Ives said.

Ives brings 27 years of service in the military, both active duty and in the Naval Reserve, with a parallel career as an educator and leader in academia.

Most recently, Ives served as the dean of academics for St. Mary’s Ryken (SMR) High School in Leonardtown. During her seven years at SMR, Ives developed and implemented a number of innovative and highly effective academic and leadership programs related to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM). Prior to becoming dean of academics Ives was a teacher and chair of the math department. While at SMR, she was selected as 2007 Veteran Teacher of the Year for the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. and earned recognition as a National Honor Roll Outstanding American Teacher.

Ives began her teaching career as a certified instructor in the California Community College system while still on active duty in the Navy. Due to numerous military transfers, Ives taught in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida and Maryland. Following her active duty career with a meteorology and oceanography specialty, Ives transitioned to the Naval Reserve.

Ives is founder and former director of the Individual Augmentee Spouse Support Group (IASSG), an organization designed to support the spouses and families of service members serving overseas fighting the global war on terror. Her work in this organization served as the model for all Navy IASSG programs throughout the country and for her work in supporting more than 450 spouses and their families she was awarded the Department of the Navy Meritorious Public Service Award.

Ives is a 2009 Leadership Southern Maryland graduate. She serves on the board of directors for the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum and the Southern Maryland Business Education Community Alliance (BECA). She is the education vice president for the Southern Maryland Chapter of the Armed Forces Communication and Electronics Association (AFCEA), chairperson for the charity committee of the Lexington Park Rotary Club, and a member of the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Arts Alliance Steering Committee, St. John Francis Regis Parish Council and a number of veteran support groups.

Ives earned a Bachelor of Science in geophysics/oceanography from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Master of Science in leadership in education and an advanced certificate in supervision and administration from Notre Dame of Maryland University.
