Spencer Ellsworth Sewell had a boisterous, distinctive and memorable laugh that could be heard all the way across his farm. On May 4 during his memorial service, his friends and loved ones paid tribute to him by mimicking the booming laugh they knew so well.

“He even laughed in church like that,” his son, Gerald Sewell, said.

After unexpectedly falling ill at the age of 87, Spencer Sewell died April 26 at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital following a lifetime of community service as a Calvert County businessman.

A lifelong resident of Calvert County, born March 9, 1927, Sewell was one of 23 who graduated from Brooks High School in 1947 out of his original freshman class of 110. After graduation, he became a school bus driver for the board of education and became a school bus contractor in 1951.
